This was the day when Krishna-dwaipayana Vyasa – author of the Mahabharata – was born. Veda Vyasa, did yeoman service to the cause of Vedic studies by gathering all the Vedic hymns extant during his times, dividing them into four parts based on their use in the sacrificial rites, and teaching them to his four chief disciples – Paila, Vaisampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu. It was this dividing and editing that earned him the honorific "Vyasa" (vyas = to edit, to divide).

The importance of a Guruji [teacher] can never be over emphasized.

Any art form is a life pursuit and Indian music and dance were mostly oral traditions passed down from generation to generation through the guru-sishya parampara [teacher-student traditions].

Students belonging to all art forms pay their respects to their Guruji on Guru Poornima in North India and on Vijaya Dasami day in South India respectively.

Concerts are arranged by students, who perform before their Guru.
Fruits and flowers – even money is showered on Gurus on this day.
When there is admiration – then reverence is the natural outcome.

India has always shown respect to age and knowledge- and what better day could there be?

Children learn their first alphabets on Vijaya Dasami day. New ventures are begun on that day.

The literal meaning of the word ‘avatara’ is descent. It is no physical climb down however, but rather akin to the teacher, who, when instructing small children, has to come down to the "level" of the child, hold his hand and teach him how to write the alphabet. This is the teacher’s avatara in front of the child.

A good guru too is one who first gets down to the level of his disciple’s ability of understanding and grants him knowledge accordingly.

Japan

Sensei 先生 (せんせい) seems the equivalent for a venerated master or teacher.
Literally, it means "the one born before me".

. WKD : Sensei, a haiku teacher .

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The meaning of Sensei
In Japan anyone who teaches anything is called sensei.
A young kindergarten teacher of 20 years old can be addressed as sensei by a parent of 50 years old because the parent appreciates the fact that the young teacher is teaching the child. This is similar to using the Mr, Miss or Ms - it merely indicates respect toward the person. In Japan a lawyer or a doctor is normally called sensei because they are supposed to know more than others. Since lawyers often become politicians, even politicians are often called sensei. It is true that in Japan the word sensei is sometimes abused. In general however, a Japanese teacher is usually addressed as sensei by his students all over the world.

Malaysia

May 16
This date was chosen because on the same day in 1956, the Federal Legislative Council of the Federation of Malaya endorsed the Razak Report, one of four reports of the Education Committee regarding education in Malaysia. The document, known as the Razak Report after Tun Abdul Razak who was Education Minister at the time, has been the basis of education in Malaysia ever since.
Although it is not an official school holiday, celebrations are usually held on May 16, or earlier, if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

Teacher's Day,
Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan Memorial Day

Kigo for Autumn

September 5th is Teacher's Day in India.
It is the birthday of former Indian president and a teacher himself: Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday".
In reply, Dr, Radhakrishnan said, "Instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' Day".

This is not a holiday in India; It's called a celebration day where teachers and students report to school as usual but the usual activities are replaced by a mood of celebration, thanking and remembrance. At some schools on this day, the responsibility of teaching is taken up by the senior students as an appreciation for their teachers.

Traditionally, people in India have given tremendous respect and honor for teachers. In fact an old Indian saying (usually taught to children), ranks teacher in the third place, even before God: "Maata, Pitha, Guru, Daivam", meaning Mother, Father, Teacher and God.

There is another saying in the form of a couplet (doha), which goes, "Guru Govind doou khare kake lagon paai? Balihari guru aap ki Govind deeo batai." meaning- I am in a fix whom to salute first: the teacher or the God. I shall choose the teacher as he is the one who is instrumental in my knowing God.

As the central piece in Hindu scriptures go - 'Guru Bramha, Guru Vishnu, Guru devo Maheshwaraha - Gurusakshath parabramha tasmai shree gurve namaha -
Teacher is the holy Trinity. Teacher is the manifestation of the lord himself.

Today is Teacher's Day. September 5th happens to be the birthday day of Dr. S Radhakrishnan, the philosopher-statesman. He was India’s second President after the tenure of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Radhakrishnan, besides being a leading philosopher of the world, was a teacher, too. In order to honour this worthy son of India, September 05 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India. Dr. Radhakrishan was born in the year 1888.

The importance of a teacher in one’s life is needless to be emphasized. Everybody remembers the touch of the soft and affectionate hand that helps a kid's tender fingers to write the first alphabet. It is rightly said, ‘A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way of others.’ Teachers ignite the fire that is hidden in each of us. We in India are fortunate to have godly teachers. Our school teachers, often poor though, considered the profession as noble. That has made a great difference in everyone’s life. In pre-independence India they could light the flame of patriotism in young minds.

The memory of the school and the teachers in our early life choke us and guide our day to day activities. The Teacher’s Day is celebrated in each and every school. The children take part in debate, senior students take the roles of teachers to teach lower classes, perform cultural activities and often take out processions to impress upon the society the importance of education and the need to respect the teachers.

On this auspicious day let us honour our teachers and greet the teaching fraternity for their noble contribution to our society.

The Sanskrit meaning of the word Guru is: the dispeller [Gu] of darkness [Ru]. Generally understood as guide, teacher, spiritual master, saint, etc., etc.

From one perspective one could say that the founders of religions were Gurus, (Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Jewish holy men and women, prophets, Hindu deities, saints, etc., and of course all of the other not mentioned great ones).

The Indian concept Guru is more apparent in Hindu spirituality than in other religions. And secondly in Buddhist spirituality, which grew out of Hinduism (just as Christianity grew out of Judaism).

In the Hindu, Buddhist, and other spiritual paths, there is the concept of the true Guru, being one who is above human smallness. Now it really gets good as everyone lines up and shouts, y Guru is the best!・

Shree Maa's interpretation is quite interesting, wherever there is teaching, the Guru is present.・

A man asked a great Guru to define the grace of the Guru.・The Guru asks the man how long would it take to get to his home by sea? By rail? By air? After the man replied, the Guru said the grace of the Guru is like air travel. Providing the fastest way to the place of our origin.

I must say that one's karma or design will dictate each person's needs, it seems there is an endless combination of variables. Some people connect with one great being and never change to any other influence, and some never have any human influence in their spiritual path and they go forward.

There are many theories about the concept of the Sat Guru or true primordial Guru. One very interesting one is that the Sat guru is the essential force found in all Gurus, and the same essence as the self of all humans. So one could say that the guru removes the darkness (ego) of a human and what is left is the self.

If Hinduism were a great tree with trunk, branches and roots, then the trunk would be Yoga, which is spiritual science based on practical experience, with a focus on truth and a system of practical techniques to merge all of the great realities together to a state where there is no division.

To embrace spiritual Yoga and sadhana with dedication is similar to having a Guru.

A wonderful example of bakti yoga (devotional union) is that of the Devotee / Guru relationship which can develop in a multitude of ways.

Outwardly one can experience the guru on many levels (mother, father, deity, etc.).

The Guru can be experienced and perceived as every particle in the entire of creation.

The Guru tells us to know this one by meditating on our own inner self. We can literally give the guru everything (hopes, failures, fears, results of our actions, sexuality, addictions, egotism, desire for self realization, greatness of being, etc.)

In the solitude of our hearts we can construct a puga to the Guru as extraordinary as our powers of visualization will permit in hopes that this one will merge their being into ours.
